Samsung heirs finalize historic tax settlement

The Lee family, which controls South Korea's largest conglomerate, Samsung, has paid the last installment of a 12 trillion won ($8bn) inheritance tax bill, marking the largest such payment in the nation's history.

Five-year payment plan concludes

Chairman Lee Jae-yong, along with his mother Hong Ra-hee and sisters Lee Boo-jin and Lee Seo-hyun, settled the tax liability in six installments over the past five years. The obligation stemmed from the estate of the late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died in October 2020.

Samsung confirmed the final payment on Sunday, noting the sum equals roughly 1.5 times South Korea's total inheritance tax revenue for 2024.

Wealth and control at stake

Lee Kun-hee left a 26 trillion won fortune, including shares, real estate, and an art collection featuring works by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. Part of the estate was donated to the National Museum of Korea and other cultural institutions.

The family's ability to retain control of Samsung was closely monitored by investors, given South Korea's 50% inheritance tax rate-one of the highest globally. The Lee family described paying taxes as a "natural duty of citizens" at the time of the estate's settlement.

Samsung's growth fuels family wealth

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the Lee family's combined net worth exceeds $45bn, more than doubling in the past year. The surge is attributed to rising demand for computer chips driven by the global artificial intelligence industry, boosting Samsung Electronics' stock value.

Samsung, founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chul, operates across electronics, heavy industry, construction, and financial services. Its technology division includes one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers and a leading TV producer.

Broader implications

The tax settlement removes a key uncertainty for Samsung's leadership structure, ensuring the Lee family maintains its influence over the conglomerate's future direction.
