Overnight attack leaves four dead in Bohodukhiv
At least four people, including three young children, were killed in Russian air strikes on Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, local officials reported on Wednesday. The attack targeted a residential home in the town of Bohodukhiv, where two two-year-old boys, a one-year-old girl, and a 34-year-old man died after a drone struck their house.
Injuries and ongoing assaults
A 35-year-old pregnant woman and a 73-year-old woman sustained injuries in the same strike, according to Kharkiv's regional head, Oleh Synehubov. Bohodukhiv, located northwest of Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, has faced near-daily Russian attacks in recent days. On Monday, a 41-year-old woman and a 10-year-old boy were also killed in the town.
Wider escalation across eastern Ukraine
Russian forces intensified their offensive on Tuesday, dropping seven bombs on the city of Slovyansk in the Donetsk region, said regional governor Vadym Filashkin. The strikes killed three people, including an 11-year-old girl. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Moscow has ramped up attacks on transport and energy infrastructure, deploying a record number of ballistic missiles.
Energy crisis deepens amid freezing temperatures
Local authorities in Kharkiv have declared a state of emergency over the energy situation, following the expiration of a temporary "energy truce" that had provided relief during sub-zero temperatures. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians are now facing severe power cuts, with many households left without running water or heating.
Diplomatic developments and retaliatory strikes
Zelensky revealed that the U.S. aims to conclude the war by June and has invited both Ukrainian and Russian representatives for talks next week. Meanwhile, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on the Russian city of Volzhsky in the Volgograd region. Regional Governor Andrei Bocharov reported that an apartment building was damaged, and a factory fire broke out as a result of the strike.
Background
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, escalating into a prolonged conflict that has devastated civilian infrastructure and claimed thousands of lives.
