Russian attacks leave 10 dead, 76 injured in Ukraine
Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drone and missile strikes over the past 24 hours killed 10 people and wounded at least 76 across five regions. The assaults targeted multiple cities as Moscow continues its aerial campaign against Ukraine.
Casualties and damage across regions
In Kherson region, three people died in separate incidents, while Odesa, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia each recorded two fatalities. Sumy region reported one death. Ukraine's air force stated that Russia launched 269 drones overnight, with 249 intercepted or jammed. Nineteen drones struck directly, and one ballistic missile hit 15 locations, causing additional damage from falling debris.
Ukraine strikes Russian oil vessels and warships
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces targeted three Russian oil tankers, a cruise-missile carrier warship, and a patrol boat in attacks on two Russian ports. The tankers, described as part of Russia's "shadow fleet," were used to bypass Western sanctions imposed after Moscow's 2022 invasion.
Zelensky confirmed significant damage to infrastructure at the Primorsk terminal on the Baltic Sea, near Finland, including an oil tanker and a patrol boat. A Karakurt-class corvette, capable of carrying Kalibr cruise missiles, was also struck. Additionally, two more oil tankers were hit at the entrance to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.
"These tankers were actively used for transporting oil. Now they will not be," Zelensky wrote on Telegram.
Video footage accompanying Zelensky's post appeared to show a naval drone approaching one of the tankers.
Russia reports Ukrainian drone attacks
Russia's military claimed Ukraine launched at least 334 drones, heavily targeting the northwestern Leningrad region. Export terminals in the area and other regions have faced repeated Ukrainian strikes in recent weeks. Kyiv asserts these attacks have disrupted billions of dollars' worth of Russian oil exports.
Kremlin responds to escalating threats
While Russian authorities have largely downplayed the impact of Ukrainian strikes, the Kremlin has expressed concern over the reach of Kyiv's drones deep into Russian territory. On Wednesday, Moscow announced it would scale back its annual Victory Day military parade on May 9, citing a "terrorist threat" from Ukraine.
Ukraine has intensified its drone strikes inside Russia in recent months, targeting what it calls legitimate military assets. Kyiv accuses Moscow of deliberately attacking civilian areas in Ukraine, a claim Russia denies.
