The Nord, a 142-meter luxury vessel tied to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov, successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, despite Iran's ongoing restrictions on maritime traffic in the critical waterway.

The $500 million yacht, registered under a company owned by Mordashov's wife, departed Dubai late Friday and arrived at Oman's Al Mouj marina by Sunday morning. Marine Traffic data confirmed the route, which included passage through the strait-an increasingly rare occurrence for private vessels since the conflict escalated.
The Nord, flying a Russian flag, features a swimming pool, submarine, and helipad, according to Superyacht Times. Mordashov, chairman of Russia's largest steel and mining firm Severstal, has been under Western sanctions since 2022 but remains one of Russia's wealthiest individuals, with an estimated net worth of $37 billion.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for one-fifth of global oil and LNG supplies, has seen sharply reduced traffic amid Iran's standoff with the U.S. Brent crude prices surged to $109 per barrel Monday, reflecting market anxiety over supply disruptions.
Iran has maintained restrictions on shipping since former U.S. President Donald Trump announced a blockade on Iranian ports. While commercial vessels have largely avoided the strait, the Nord's transit underscores Russia's diplomatic efforts to bypass Western pressure.

Tehran and Moscow deepened ties this week during high-level talks in St. Petersburg. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with Putin praising Iran's "courageous fight" against U.S. and Israeli pressure, according to Russian state media.
