Updated 04 April 2026 - Casualties reported in multiple regions as cross-border attacks escalate.
Market attack leaves five dead in Nikopol
A Russian drone strike on a busy market in the southern Ukrainian town of Nikopol killed five people and wounded 21, including a 14-year-old girl, Ukraine's prosecutor general's office reported. The attack occurred at 09:50 local time (06:50 GMT) on Saturday.
Images released by regional authorities show shattered market stalls scattered with debris, broken glass, and food. The town, located across the Dnipro River from Russian-occupied territory, has endured frequent shelling since the full-scale invasion began. Nearly half of Nikopol's pre-war population of 100,000 has fled.
Prosecutors are investigating the strike as a war crime after a second drone hit the same area shortly afterward, injuring two men.
Widespread attacks reported across Ukraine
The Nikopol attack follows a day of heavy bombardment on Friday, when at least 15 civilians died in drone and missile strikes nationwide. Overnight, Ukraine's air force said Russia launched nearly 300 drones, with casualties also reported in Kharkiv and the northern Sumy region.
In response, Moscow claimed to have intercepted 85 Ukrainian drones.
Ukraine strikes back in southern Russia
A Ukrainian drone and missile attack on the Russian city of Taganrog overnight killed one person and seriously injured four, according to Russian officials. Rostov regional governor Yuri Slyusar stated the strike triggered a fire at a logistics company.
A Ukrainian defense ministry official attributed the casualties to "Russian air defense operations." Kyiv also reported targeting two factories linked to Russia's military-industrial complex.
Industrial sites hit in escalating strikes
Ukraine's Security Service announced that drone strikes had disabled production at the Alchevsk metallurgical plant in Russian-occupied Luhansk. The facility, hit for the second time in a month, suffered damage to blast furnaces and key workshops.
Earlier, a Ukrainian official described a "massive attack" on a synthetic rubber and petrochemical plant in Togliatti, Russia, which supplies military materials.
Diplomatic efforts stall as violence rises
President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a temporary Easter truce, but Moscow has not responded. Major daytime attacks by Russia, once uncommon, have surged in recent weeks.
The escalation coincides with a shift in U.S. focus toward the Middle East conflict, leaving peace negotiations in limbo.
