Real Madrid secure Champions League last 16 spot

Real Madrid progressed to the Champions League knockout stages after a 2-1 victory over Benfica, sealing a 3-1 aggregate win. The match was overshadowed by allegations of racial abuse against Vinícius Júnior during the first leg.

Racism controversy dominates build-up

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni was banned for one game after Vinícius Jr accused him of racial abuse in the first leg, a claim Prestianni denies. The Portuguese club's midfielder missed Wednesday's return fixture due to the suspension.

Real Madrid fans displayed a banner reading "No to racism" in Spanish before kick-off, showing solidarity with the Brazilian forward. Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni described the win as "a victory for everyone who stands against racism."

"There are more important things than this match, than football. Vinícius keeps his confidence and stays focused. They made the right decision by not letting [Prestianni] play."

Vinícius Jr shines with crucial goal

Vinícius scored in both legs, including an 80th-minute strike in the second match that secured Real Madrid's advancement. He celebrated with his trademark dance, later posting on social media that "the dance goes on."

Teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold praised Vinícius's composure, calling him "very chilled" before the game. "He doesn't need to prove anything-he steps up when we need him most," the defender said.

Former Chelsea forward Joe Cole hailed Vinícius's performance as "brilliant," while Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa celebrated the goal as "deserved." Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois added: "I'm happy Vini's still dancing-it means he's scoring."

Mourinho's return and Mbappé's injury concern

The match marked José Mourinho's first visit to Real Madrid's stadium since his 2010-13 tenure as manager. However, he was barred from the dugout due to a suspension.

Kylian Mbappé missed the game with a knee injury, raising concerns about his availability for upcoming fixtures. Arbeloa confirmed the forward would rest to recover fully, hoping for a swift return.

"We felt the best thing was for him to stop and recover 100%. I hope it's nothing serious and he'll be back in a few days or weeks."
