Queensland man faces 596 charges in global child abuse case
A 27-year-old man, detained since February last year, has been charged with hundreds of child abuse-related offences spanning Australia and 15 other nations, Queensland Police announced on Thursday.
Scale of alleged abuse uncovered
Investigators recovered over 23,000 videos and images of alleged abuse from the suspect's electronic devices. The sheer volume of material required extensive forensic analysis, according to Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Denzil Clark.
Of the 459 victims identified so far, 360 have been confirmed, with investigations ongoing. More than 200 victims are located in Australia, while the remainder are primarily in English-speaking countries. Most victims are boys aged between seven and 15.
Modus operandi and charges
The accused allegedly operated between 2018 and 2025, creating multiple online personas to target children. Police allege he posed as both men and women, using grooming and coercion to obtain sexually explicit material from his victims.
The material was reportedly stored in meticulously organised folders. Charges include 244 counts of producing child abuse material via a carriage service, 163 counts of using a carriage service to procure minors under 16, and 87 counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child through a carriage service.
Police warn of online grooming risks
Clark highlighted the growing threat of children being manipulated into sharing sexual images through popular apps, games, and social media platforms. He refrained from naming specific sites but described them as widely used.
"The trauma inflicted on these children is profound," Clark said. "We are working with international partners to identify victims and ensure they receive appropriate support."
Police confirmed all offences occurred online and indicated other suspects are under investigation.
Next steps
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. Authorities continue to collaborate with global agencies to identify additional victims and provide assistance.
