Quadruple amputee athlete charged in fatal shooting

Dayton Webber, a 27-year-old professional cornhole player who lost all four limbs in infancy, faces first-degree murder charges after allegedly killing a passenger during a weekend argument in La Plata, Maryland.

Incident details

Investigators say Webber was driving when he shot Bradrick Wells, 27, in the front seat of a vehicle. After the shooting, Webber reportedly attempted to dispose of the body before fleeing the scene.

Two backseat passengers alerted police after refusing to help move Wells' body. They flagged down officers near the crime scene on Sunday night, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

Discovery of the victim

Approximately two hours later, a resident in Charlotte Hall, Maryland-about 20 miles from La Plata-reported finding a body in their yard. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene.

Webber's background

Webber made history as the first quadruple amputee to compete in the American Cornhole League. In a 2023 essay for NBC's Today, he described surviving a blood infection as an infant that led to the amputation of his arms and legs. Doctors gave him only a 3% chance of survival.

"I went from overcoming a serious blood infection and undergoing a quadruple amputation as a baby to becoming a professional athlete as an adult."

His social media profiles feature videos of him firing guns, including clips titled "No Hands No Feet Shooting," and he identifies as a motivational speaker.

Arrest and charges

Webber was arrested hours after the shooting in Charlottesville, Virginia. Authorities have charged him with first-degree murder and other offenses.

Reaction from the cornhole community

The American Cornhole League released a statement expressing condolences to Wells' family and loved ones.

"Our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells."
