Updated 28 February 2026 - Airspace restrictions expand across the Middle East following airstrikes.
Flight diversion amid regional tensions
A Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha from Birmingham was forced to turn back mid-journey on Saturday after Qatari airspace closed due to ongoing military strikes in the region. The aircraft, originally scheduled to depart at 08:14 GMT, reached as far as France before returning to Birmingham Airport, where it landed at approximately 11:20, according to flight tracking data.
Airline suspends operations to Doha
Qatar Airways confirmed the suspension of all flights to the Qatari capital, citing the closure of the country's airspace. The airline stated it is coordinating with authorities to assist affected passengers and plans to resume services once the airspace reopens.
"The safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority. We regret any inconvenience caused," a spokesperson said.
Broader disruptions reported
Emirates has also halted flights to and from Dubai from Birmingham Airport in Solihull. Meanwhile, a British Airways flight to Doha on Friday was ordered to turn around roughly a third of the way into its journey, leaving over 200 passengers stranded back at Heathrow.
Escalating conflict in the region
Explosions were reported across multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, on Saturday, following the collapse of nuclear negotiations earlier in the week. The UK did not participate in the strikes, which have triggered retaliatory actions from Iran, according to Israel's military. Reports indicate attacks on US facilities in neighboring countries.
UK issues safety advisory
The UK Foreign Office has urged British nationals in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates to shelter in place immediately after explosions were reported in the region. Birmingham Airport has yet to comment on the situation.
Next steps for travelers
Qatar Airways and other carriers are expected to provide updates on flight resumptions as airspace conditions evolve. Passengers are advised to monitor official airline communications for further instructions.
