Premier League survival showdown looms

Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest, two clubs mired in crisis, face off on Sunday in a match that could shape their Premier League futures. Forest currently sit just outside the relegation zone on goal difference, while Spurs are a single point ahead after a season marked by instability.

Tottenham's season of disarray

Spurs have endured one of their most turbulent campaigns in decades. After finishing 17th last season-despite winning the Europa League under Ange Postecoglou-the club sacked the Australian and appointed Thomas Frank, who lasted just eight months before departing in February.

Interim manager Igor Tudor has failed to steady the ship, securing only one win in his first five matches. Wednesday's Champions League exit to Atlético Madrid, following a disastrous first leg where goalkeeper Antonín Kinský was substituted after 17 minutes, underscored the club's dysfunction.

A recent internal review, overseen by CEO Vinai Venkatesham, identified critical failings: a lack of focus on on-pitch success, an unsustainable wage structure, and a growing disconnect with fans. The club plans structural changes, including appointing a director of football operations this summer, but time may be running out.

"All of them deserve the blame. There has to be questions answered," said Jay Coughlin of the fan group Change for Tottenham (CFT). "The belief that we will be a Premier League club is, I'm hoping, still alive-but the reality is there is no club too big to go down."

Forest's self-inflicted struggles

Nottingham Forest's season has been equally chaotic, though with more fan support for ownership. After narrowly missing Champions League qualification last May, the club spent £180 million in the summer transfer window, but few signings have made an impact. Key players like Chris Wood have been sidelined by injury, while loans for Douglas Luiz and Oleksandr Zinchenko were cut short.

Forest's managerial merry-go-round-Nuno Espírito Santo, Postecoglou, Sean Dyche, and now Vítor Pereira-has compounded the instability. Despite Thursday's Europa League quarter-final qualification, the club's early-season ambitions have collapsed.

"Nobody can argue it's not been self-inflicted," said James Bogue of the Nottingham Forest Supporters' Trust (NFST). "The lessons will-and must-be learned."

What's at stake on Sunday

A win for either side could provide a lifeline in the relegation battle. Spurs, winless in the Premier League since December, have just two victories in their last 21 league matches. Forest, meanwhile, have shown glimpses of resilience but remain vulnerable.

For Spurs, a loss could deepen the crisis, with fans already planning protests against the ENIC Group's ownership. Forest's fans, while frustrated, remain broadly supportive of owner Evangelos Marinakis, praising his ambition despite the missteps.

As Bogue put it: "Do we want owners who are not ambitious, or do we want to strive higher? I'd go with the latter."
