PlayStation Plus raises prices for new subscribers
Sony has announced price increases for its PlayStation Plus gaming service in certain markets, citing current economic conditions. The changes take effect on Wednesday, May 20, but will not impact existing subscribers unless their plans lapse or are modified.
New pricing details
The Essential tier's monthly subscription will rise by £1 in the UK, $1 in the US, and €1 in the Eurozone, bringing the new prices to £7.99, $10.99, and €9.99, respectively. The three-month plan will increase by £3, $3, and €3, reaching £21.99, $27.99, and €27.99.
Sony did not disclose which regions would be affected but clarified that Turkey and India are exceptions where current subscribers may see changes.
Industry-wide cost pressures
The adjustment follows a recent £90 increase for the PlayStation 5 in the UK and a $100 hike in the US, also attributed to global economic challenges. Sony highlighted ongoing supply chain disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions and rising memory chip costs driven by the AI sector's demand.
Nintendo, Sony's competitor, recently raised the price of its upcoming Switch 2 console in the US and Europe, though the UK's revised price remains unannounced.
Subscriber reactions and market outlook
Some users criticized the move on social media, with one commenter arguing, "Online games should be free to play... doesn't even make sense we have to pay to play online." Another quipped, "Are the 'market conditions' in the room with us?"
Despite the price hikes, Sony forecasts strong profits for its gaming division in the year ending March 2027, buoyed by the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6, expected to be one of the fastest-selling games in history.
Unanswered questions
Sony has not clarified whether the price increases will extend to the Extra or Premium tiers or the annual subscription plans. The BBC has reached out to the company for further details.
