Updated 03 January 2026, 10:30 local time - More than 130 individuals spent Friday night sheltering at Mitsumine Shrine in Saitama Prefecture after heavy snowfall sealed off surrounding roads, officials confirmed.

Snowfall cuts off access

Local authorities reported approximately 50 vehicles were stranded near the shrine, prompting all occupants to relocate inside the building. No injuries or illnesses were reported among those sheltering, according to Saitama officials.

Widespread winter conditions

The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded up to 80 centimeters of snow across parts of the country over the past three days. Forecasts predict an additional 40 centimeters in some regions by Saturday as a cold front lingers.

In the Mitsumine area, temperatures plummeted to -15°C, creating hazardous icy conditions on roads. Local police cited multiple incidents, including vehicles skidding, as the reason for closing access routes to the shrine.

Shrine serves as refuge

Situated 1,110 meters above sea level in the Chichibu mountains, Mitsumine Shrine is a prominent Shinto site dedicated to the deities Izanami and Izanagi, believed to have shaped the Japanese islands. According to historical accounts, the shrine was established in the 1st century by Prince Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, son of Emperor Keikō.

While the shrine typically draws worshippers and visitors, it became an emergency shelter after authorities determined travel was unsafe.

Current outlook

Officials have not announced when roads will reopen, as further snowfall is expected throughout the weekend. The local government continues to monitor conditions and provide updates to those sheltering at the site.
