OpenAI introduces health-focused ChatGPT feature in the US
OpenAI has launched a new version of its chatbot, ChatGPT Health, allowing users in the United States to upload medical records and fitness app data for personalized health advice. The company emphasizes the tool is not designed for diagnosis or treatment but aims to enhance user interactions with health-related queries.
How the feature works
ChatGPT Health analyzes data from platforms like Apple Health, Peloton, and MyFitnessPal, alongside medical records, to provide tailored responses. OpenAI states that conversations within this feature are stored separately from other chats and will not be used to train its AI models. The company describes the tool as a support system rather than a replacement for professional medical care.
Privacy concerns raised by campaigners
Privacy advocates have expressed alarm over the potential risks of sharing sensitive health data with AI systems. Andrew Crawford, from the Center for Democracy and Technology, stressed the need for "airtight" safeguards to protect user information, particularly as OpenAI explores advertising as a revenue stream.
"New AI health tools offer the promise of empowering patients and promoting better health outcomes, but health data is some of the most sensitive information people can share and it must be protected."
Andrew Crawford, Center for Democracy and Technology
Crawford warned that companies not bound by strict privacy regulations could misuse health data, putting users at risk.
Potential impact on healthcare and competition
Max Sinclair, CEO of AI marketing platform Azoma, called the launch a "watershed moment" that could reshape patient care and retail. He suggested ChatGPT Health could position OpenAI as a "trusted medical adviser," influencing how people access health information and make purchasing decisions.
With over 230 million weekly health-related queries directed at ChatGPT, OpenAI is tapping into a growing demand for AI-driven health insights. However, Sinclair noted the feature could also serve as a strategic move to counter competition from rivals like Google's Gemini.
Availability and regulatory hurdles
ChatGPT Health is currently in a limited rollout for a small group of early users in the US, with a waitlist open for broader access. The feature is not yet available in the UK, Switzerland, or the European Economic Area, where stricter data protection laws apply.
Crawford highlighted concerns about firms operating outside privacy regulations, warning that inconsistent policies could endanger sensitive health information.
