OpenAI moves toward public listing amid AI sector rush
OpenAI has taken a key step toward an initial public offering (IPO), filing confidentially with U.S. regulators as rival AI firms also eye stock market debuts. The move follows Anthropic's recent announcement of similar plans and SpaceX's upcoming Nasdaq listing.
Competition heats up in AI funding race
OpenAI disclosed its IPO plans on Monday, though it has not set a timeline. The company acknowledged the decision involves "a complicated set of tradeoffs" but said it wanted to preempt potential leaks. Its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) grants the option to go public sooner if deemed advantageous.
Anthropic, creator of the Claude chatbot, announced its own IPO plans last week. Both firms are locked in a high-stakes rivalry, competing for users, corporate clients, and investor capital. Their private valuations have surged in recent months, with OpenAI valued at $852 billion and Anthropic at $965 billion.
Why AI giants are turning to public markets
Sunil Krishnan of Aviva Investors told the BBC that AI companies face "a vast need for cash" to fund infrastructure, including chips and model training. The sector's massive costs-OpenAI's annual compute expenses alone exceed $100 billion-have pushed firms toward public listings to secure capital.
Richard Crowley, an assistant professor at Singapore Management University, noted that the performance of OpenAI and Anthropic's IPOs could shape investor expectations for the broader generative AI industry. "Their financing fates are intertwined through public perception," he said.
Challenges of going public
While an IPO could inject billions into OpenAI, it also brings new scrutiny. Public companies must disclose financial details and product pipelines, which can deter private investors and slow deal-making. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, previously stated he would pursue a listing "when it makes sense," emphasizing no urgency.
Anthropic, however, has signaled optimism, telling investors it expects profitability in the first half of 2026 due to strong sales of its Claude platform. SpaceX, valued at $1.75 trillion, is set to debut on Friday, further intensifying the race for AI dominance.
What's next for OpenAI and the AI sector
OpenAI's IPO filing marks a pivotal moment for the industry, but the timing remains uncertain. The company's statement hinted at unfinished priorities better suited to private operations. Meanwhile, SpaceX's listing and Anthropic's profitability claims add pressure to deliver results.
"We might think of OpenAI and Anthropic as competitors, but their success in public markets will influence how investors view the entire generative AI space."
