Shooting at Baton Rouge mall leaves one dead, five wounded
One person died and five others were injured on Friday after gunfire erupted between two groups in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, authorities confirmed.
Police describe targeted dispute
Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. told reporters the violence stemmed from an argument between two groups. He emphasized the attack was not random but a deliberate confrontation.
"Unfortunately, innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire," Morse said during a press briefing.
Arrests and medical response
Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting, police announced later in the day. Earlier reports indicated ten people were hospitalized, with at least two requiring surgery. Authorities later revised the injury count to five.
Officials react and urge caution
Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards issued a stern warning to those involved: "To the thugs that did this, we're going to catch you."
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry coordinated with law enforcement and advised the public to steer clear of the area. On social media, Landry expressed prayers for the victims and gratitude for the swift police response.
Call for witness cooperation
Police urged anyone with video footage of the incident to share it with authorities to aid the investigation.
