Fan dies as chaos erupts outside Lima football stadium
One supporter was killed and 47 others injured on Saturday when an incident unfolded outside Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima ahead of a local derby between Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes, Peruvian authorities confirmed.
Conflicting reports on cause of incident
Initial accounts suggested a section of the stadium's wall or structure had collapsed, but officials later disputed this version of events. Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero told reporters at a Lima hospital that three of the injured remain in critical condition.
Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo, however, stated that the southern stands appeared structurally sound, with no evidence of collapsed walls or fallen sections. "There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit," he said.
Emergency response and investigation
The Interior Ministry initially reported on X (formerly Twitter) that 40 firefighters had responded to an emergency at the stadium involving "people trapped in a structure." Alianza Lima later issued a statement on the same platform, asserting that preliminary information indicated the incident was not linked to a structural collapse.
The Peruvian Professional Football League said authorities are investigating the circumstances of the gathering and reaffirmed its "commitment to the safety and well-being of all attendees at sporting events."
Match to proceed as scheduled
Despite the tragedy, the league confirmed that Saturday night's derby would go ahead as planned. Hundreds of fans had already gathered outside the stadium hours before kickoff, wearing team colors and waving Alianza Lima flags.
