Nvidia enters consumer AI PC market with new chip
Nvidia has launched the RTX Spark, a new processor designed for personal computers integrated with artificial intelligence, marking the company's push into the consumer AI device sector. The announcement was made by CEO Jensen Huang during a keynote speech at the Computex technology conference in Taipei on Monday.
Huang hails shift as transformative as smartphone revolution
Describing the development as a landmark moment, Huang compared the transition to AI-powered PCs to the evolution of mobile phones into smartphones. "This reinvention of the computer is as significant as the transformation of the phone into what we now recognize as the smartphone," he stated.
RTX Spark: A new era of "personal AI agents"
Nvidia described the RTX Spark as a "superchip" designed for the age of personal AI assistants, positioning it as a shift from computers as tools to computers as collaborative partners. The chip will be featured in a new range of Windows PCs from manufacturers including Lenovo, HP, Dell, Microsoft Surface, Asus, and MSI, with availability expected in autumn 2026. Models from Acer and Gigabyte are set to follow.
Challenge to Apple and Intel in competitive PC market
The move represents a direct challenge to established players in the PC industry, such as Apple and Intel. According to research firm Gartner, Lenovo, HP, Dell, and Apple collectively accounted for nearly 75% of the global PC market in the first quarter of 2026.
US tightens export rules on advanced Nvidia chips to China
On Sunday, the U.S. government announced stricter controls on the sale of Nvidia's most advanced semiconductors to Chinese companies. New guidance from the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) clarified that a license is now required to export high-end AI chips, including Nvidia's Blackwell processors, to subsidiaries of Chinese firms located outside China.
The measure is part of Washington's broader effort to restrict Chinese access to cutting-edge technology critical for AI development. Nvidia's dominance in AI-driven data centers has propelled it to become the world's most valuable company, with a market valuation exceeding $5 trillion (£3.7 trillion).
