Nintendo Switch surpasses 155 million sales, sets new record
Nintendo's hybrid console has officially become the company's most successful gaming hardware, outpacing the Nintendo DS after nearly a decade on the market. The milestone was announced in the company's latest financial report, though investor reaction was mixed.
How the Switch climbed to the top
Since its launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 155 million units, eclipsing the 154 million sales of the Nintendo DS, which held the previous record. The console now ranks as the second best-selling gaming system of all time, trailing only Sony's PlayStation 2, which sold more than 160 million units.
A significant boost in sales occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, as lockdowns drove demand for at-home entertainment. Industry analysts credit the Switch's success to its strong library of first-party titles, including blockbuster franchises like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, and Mario Kart, all of which saw record-breaking sales during the console's lifespan.
"Even games like Luigi's Mansion and Mario Party have sold tens of millions. The Switch's appeal spans all age groups, making it a go-to choice for families and casual gamers alike," said Christopher Dring, a gaming industry expert.
Switch 2 launches with strong early sales but faces challenges
Despite the Switch's historic success, Nintendo's latest financial report revealed a 11% drop in share prices, fueled by concerns over software sales and rising memory chip costs. The company's new console, the Switch 2, released in June 2025, has sold 17 million units to date-a promising start, but one that may not reach the heights of its predecessor.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged that higher memory chip prices could impact profitability in 2026. Other factors, such as U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty in key markets, may also limit the Switch 2's potential, according to Chris Scullion, deputy editor of Video Games Chronicle.
"While the Switch 2's success is all but guaranteed, Nintendo might have to settle for it selling a lot rather than breaking records," Scullion said.
Why the Switch resonated with gamers
The Switch's hybrid design-functioning as both a home console and a handheld device-played a key role in its popularity. Freelance journalist Rachel Watts noted that its accessibility and family-friendly games made it a household staple during the pandemic.
"Everyone I knew had a Nintendo Switch. It was the perfect console for people stuck at home, offering something for both kids and adults," Watts said.
What's next for Nintendo?
With the Switch 2 now on the market, Nintendo faces the challenge of sustaining momentum amid rising production costs and shifting consumer trends. Analysts suggest the company's ability to innovate within its beloved franchises will be crucial in maintaining its dominance in the gaming industry.
