Nine detained in Lyon murder investigation
French police have arrested nine individuals in connection with the fatal assault of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old far-right nationalist student, in Lyon. Authorities suspect the attackers are linked to a banned far-left group.
Attack follows far-right demonstration
Deranque, a mathematics student, was beaten and kicked in the head by a group of masked assailants on Thursday. He died in hospital two days later. The attack occurred after a small protest by far-right feminists at Lyon's Institute of Political Studies (Sciences-Po), which Deranque had been assisting to protect.
Far-left militant ties confirmed
According to reports, the suspects are affiliated with La Jeune Garde (Young Guard), a far-left militant group previously banned in France. The arrests include Jacques-Elie Favrot, a parliamentary assistant for a deputy from the radical left party France Unbowed (LFI).
Political fallout for LFI
The killing has intensified scrutiny on LFI, its 70 lawmakers, and leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, a potential 2027 presidential candidate. Mélenchon denied any party involvement on Sunday, calling accusations of complicity "libel."
"We have nothing to do with this story. Those who accuse us are committing a libel. We express our consternation, but also our empathy and compassion for [Deranque's] family and friends. We have said dozens of times that we oppose all forms of violence."

Prosecutor details fatal injuries
State prosecutor Thierry Dran revealed on Monday that Deranque was assaulted by "at least six" individuals. A post-mortem examination confirmed severe skull and brain trauma as the cause of death.
Broader implications
The case has reignited debates over political violence in France, with authorities vowing to pursue all leads. The investigation remains ongoing.
