Nigerian musicians dominate Afrima 2025 in Lagos

The 9th All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) wrapped up in Lagos on Sunday, with Nigerian artists securing multiple top prizes. The event, judged by a panel of music experts from across Africa and the diaspora, highlighted the country's growing influence in the continent's music scene.

Burna Boy and Shallipopi lead Nigerian wins

Global Afrobeats star Burna Boy claimed the Album of the Year award for No Sign of Weakness. He also shared the Best African Collaboration trophy with rising artist Shallipopi, who additionally won Song of the Year for his viral hit Laho.

Rema and other Nigerian stars shine

Rema emerged as the night's biggest winner, taking home three awards: Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African Artiste in RnB and Soul. Other Nigerian winners included Yemi Alade, who earned Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary for You Are from the animated series Iyanu, and veteran rapper Phyno, named Best African Artiste in African Hip-Hop.

Emerging talent and continental recognition

Qing Madi was named Most Promising Artiste of the Year, while Chella won African Fans' Favourite. Despite Nigeria's dominance, the awards also celebrated artists from across Africa. Senegal's Bakhaw Dioum won Song Writer of the Year, Algeria's DJ Moh Green took DJ of the Year, and Ghana's Wendy Shay was crowned Best Female Artiste in West Africa. South Africa's Nontokozo Mkhize and Tanzania's Juma Jux also secured regional honors.

Afrobeats' global rise underscored

The success of Nigerian artists at Afrima reflects the continued expansion of Afrobeats, a genre blending African rhythms with Western influences. Burna Boy, a key figure in the genre's global breakthrough, further solidified his status with his latest album win.

The week-long ceremony brought together industry professionals and showcased the diversity of African music talent. While Nigeria led the tally, the awards emphasized the continent's rich musical landscape.
