Provisional suspension of doctors announced
The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has temporarily barred three physicians from practicing after the death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of acclaimed writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The child died on 7 January following complications during medical procedures at Euracare Hospital in Lagos.
Investigation finds preliminary evidence of negligence
An MDCN inquiry panel identified a prima facie case of medical negligence involving Euracare and Atlantis Hospital in the management of the toddler. The three doctors-whose identities remain undisclosed-face disciplinary proceedings that could result in permanent license revocation.
Dr. Munir Bature, spokesperson for the Nigeria Medical Association, confirmed the suspensions to the BBC, stating, "The final outcome will be decided after a disciplinary tribunal reviews their cases."
Family alleges oxygen denial and excessive sedation
Adichie's family accused the hospital of withholding oxygen and administering excessive sedation, which they claim led to cardiac arrest. In a statement, Euracare expressed "deepest sympathies" but denied any wrongdoing.
An inquest into Nkanu's death is scheduled to begin on 14 April at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos. The coroner will hear testimony from medical experts and hospital representatives to determine the cause of death.
Case sparks national debate on healthcare safety
The incident has triggered public outrage and renewed scrutiny of Nigeria's healthcare system. In response, the federal health ministry acknowledged "systemic challenges" and announced the formation of a national task force on clinical governance and patient safety to enhance care standards.
Adichie's global influence
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an internationally celebrated author, known for works like Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah. Her 2013 essay We Should All Be Feminists gained further prominence after Beyoncé sampled it in her song Flawless. Adichie was named to Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in 2015 for her contributions to postcolonial feminist literature.
Next steps
The disciplinary tribunal will convene in the coming weeks to review the doctors' cases. Meanwhile, the coroner's inquest is expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Nkanu's death.
