Police launch investigation after singer's sudden death
Nigerian authorities have detained one individual as part of their inquiry into the death of 22-year-old Afrofuji artist Afeez Adesina, known professionally as Destiny Boy. Ogun State Police confirmed the arrest in a brief statement, indicating their homicide unit is leading the case.
Family reveals struggle with long-term illness
Adesina's death, announced on Sunday, triggered widespread shock and speculation online. His family later disclosed he had battled a chronic medical condition that caused seizures. In a video message, his mother Saida described how the illness had severely affected him, stating it "had almost run him mad." Relatives often had to restrain him during episodes to prevent him from running away.
The singer was buried the same day in accordance with Islamic traditions. His body was reportedly taken to a mortuary, with footage of the process circulating widely on social media and fueling rumors about the cause of death.
Tributes pour in for rising Afrofuji star
Destiny Boy gained national recognition in 2019 after his cover of Davido's hit song If went viral. He later released original tracks and covers, blending traditional Yoruba Fuji music with contemporary Afrobeats. His career began as a backup dancer for Fuji musician Pasuma at T2 Boys Studios in Lagos's Agege suburb.
Fellow artists and fans have flooded social media with condolences. Singer Ruger questioned the lack of an autopsy on X, writing, "We just have to accept that he's dead. May God RIP Destiny Boy."
Personal life and legacy
Adesina's death comes nearly a year after the birth of his first child with partner Iremide in November 2024. His family sought both medical and traditional treatments for his condition, though details about the illness remain unclear.
Police have not released further information about the ongoing investigation or the identity of the arrested individual.
