NewJeans members announce return to Ador amid legal dispute
All five members of K-pop group NewJeans will return to their record label Ador, members Hanni, Danielle, and Minji announced Wednesday, reversing fears of a potential split after the label earlier stated only Hyein and Haerin would continue under its management.
Conflicting statements spark fan concerns
Ador, a subsidiary of South Korea's largest music label Hybe, initially released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) confirming that Hyein and Haerin had decided to "respect the court's latest ruling" following "thoughtful consideration with their families." The label urged fans to refrain from speculation regarding the group's future.
Hours later, the remaining three members-Hanni, Danielle, and Minji-issued a separate statement declaring their intention to return to Ador as well. They cited delays in communication due to one member's current location in Antarctica, adding, "We will continue greeting you with sincere music and performances."
Legal battle over contract validity
The dispute stems from NewJeans' 2024 attempt to leave Ador, alleging mistreatment and manipulation by the label. Ador denied the claims and filed a lawsuit to enforce the group's contract, which runs until 2029. A South Korean court upheld the contract's validity in late October, prompting NewJeans to announce plans for an appeal.
Legal experts noted the group faced slim chances of overturning the ruling, given the court's clear stance. The deadline for filing the appeal expires Wednesday, though it remains unclear whether NewJeans has submitted any documents.
Industry-wide implications
The conflict has drawn attention to the power dynamics in K-pop, where labels often maintain strict control over artists' careers. NewJeans, formed in 2022, rose to prominence with hits like Attention and SuperShy, the latter earning accolades from outlets including Rolling Stone and Billboard. However, their legal battle has stalled new releases, including a planned comeback under the name NJZ, which was blocked by a court injunction.
Fan reactions and future uncertainty
Fans expressed relief at the members' reunification but remained wary of the label's influence. "It's too hard for an individual to fight a big company," one user wrote on X. Another commented, "If only two out of five members continued, that would've been a disbandment."
Ador has yet to confirm the return of all five members. NewJeans' legal representative declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.
"We request the warm support from the fans and respectfully urge you to avoid engaging in unfounded speculation regarding the members."
