Newcastle defender Lewis Hall draws high praise from teammate
Newcastle United's Lewis Hall has been hailed as a potential world-class left-back by teammate Kieran Trippier, who believes the 21-year-old is already among the best in his position.
From benchwarmer to Champions League standout
Hall's journey at Newcastle has been rapid. Just three years ago, the young defender struggled to secure a starting spot. Now, he is preparing for a high-stakes Champions League rematch against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
Trippier, known for his no-nonsense approach, has been impressed by Hall's growth. The England international described him as a player with "all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the world" and insisted he already is.
Hall shines in Barcelona clash despite late equalizer
In the first leg against Barcelona, Hall faced the daunting task of containing teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. While Yamal scored a 96th-minute penalty equalizer, Hall's defensive performance was dominant. The Barcelona forward failed to dribble past him and was limited to a single shot from a tight angle.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo dubbed Hall the "anti-Lamine" for his ability to neutralize the young star. Beyond defense, Hall also showcased his attacking prowess, creating five chances and delivering three passes that broke Barcelona's defensive line-more than any other player on the pitch.
Eddie Howe cautious but confident
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been more reserved in his praise, emphasizing that Hall must continue proving himself. "The challenge is a big one for him," Howe said. "This will be a good test of his defensive skills and experience."
Hall, however, has embraced the pressure. When asked about facing Yamal, he grinned and expressed eagerness to test himself against the best. His performance in the first leg suggests he is ready for the challenge.
England call-up looms as Hall's stock rises
Hall's strong form has reignited discussions about his international future. The left-back, who has two England caps, is expected to be included in Gareth Southgate's squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.
Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who gave Hall his debut at 17, has closely monitored his progress. Tuchel's assistant, Arno Michels, praised Hall's development, calling it "incredible" for a player still only 21.
Humility and roots keep Hall grounded
Despite his rapid rise, Hall remains level-headed. He credits his tight-knit family and a small circle of friends for keeping him grounded. Each summer, he returns to his hometown of Binfield to present trophies at a local youth football tournament he once played in.
Hall also maintains ties with his former Chelsea under-23s manager, Mark Robinson, whom he recently met after Newcastle's win at Stamford Bridge. Robinson described him as "very humble" and predicted even greater success ahead.
"There's lots more to come because Lewis is a very humble lad. You have to keep learning, keep improving, and he will do that."
Mark Robinson, former Chelsea U23 manager
What's next for Hall?
With the World Cup on the horizon, Hall sees it as a "motivating factor." As he continues to impress for Newcastle, his path to becoming a regular for England appears increasingly clear.
