DA's office opens investigation into Swalwell allegations

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has launched a formal inquiry into sexual misconduct claims against Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, a prominent candidate in California's gubernatorial race. Four women have accused Swalwell of conduct ranging from harassment to rape, including an alleged incident in New York.

Allegations surface amid gubernatorial campaign

The accusations emerged publicly on Friday via the San Francisco Chronicle, which reported that a former congressional staffer alleged Swalwell made inappropriate advances, including soliciting sex and sending explicit messages. The woman claimed two assaults occurred-one in California in 2019 and another in New York in 2024-both while she was allegedly too intoxicated to consent.

CNN later published accounts from three additional women accusing Swalwell of misconduct. The congressman's legal team has issued cease-and-desist letters to two accusers, according to the network.

Swalwell denies claims, vows legal response

Swalwell, a nine-term representative from California's 14th District, has categorically denied the allegations. In a Facebook video, he stated, "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public-as a prosecutor and a congressman-and have always protected women." He acknowledged past "mistakes in judgment" but framed them as personal matters involving his wife, to whom he apologized.

"I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action."

Political fallout escalates

Within hours of the allegations becoming public, Swalwell lost endorsements from key Democratic figures, including Senator Adam Schiff and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the claims "deeply troubling," while former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged an independent investigation "outside of a gubernatorial campaign."

Swalwell's congressional and campaign staff issued a joint statement expressing horror at the allegations and solidarity with the accusers, calling the reported behavior "abhorrent" and a betrayal of public trust.

Investigation urges survivors to come forward

The Manhattan DA's office encouraged survivors and witnesses to contact its Special Victims Division, emphasizing a "trauma-informed, survivor-centered" approach. The office's statement on Saturday noted that its team includes specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors.

Race for California governor hangs in balance

The allegations arrive as California's Democratic primary enters a critical phase, with mail-in ballots set to be distributed in the coming weeks. Swalwell had been considered a frontrunner in the crowded field to replace outgoing Governor Newsom, though no clear leader has emerged.

Analysts warn that the divided Democratic vote could hand the top-two primary spots to Republican candidates, potentially excluding Democrats from the November general election-a scenario that would break the party's 20-year hold on the governorship.
