Charges filed in Brooklyn shooting that killed infant

A 21-year-old man has been charged with murder after a seven-month-old girl was fatally shot while sitting in her pushchair in New York's Williamsburg neighborhood on April 1, authorities said.

Suspect appears in court

Amuri Greene pleaded not guilty on Friday to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in connection with the death of Kaori Patterson-Moore, according to CBS News, a partner of the BBC. He also faces five weapons possession charges, two counts of attempted weapons possession, and two assault charges.

Police allege Greene was the gunman in a gang-related shooting that unintentionally struck the infant. He was thrown from the scooter after the attack and hospitalized under police guard before being taken into custody.

Second suspect arrested

Matthew Rodriguez, 18, was detained in Pennsylvania in connection with the shooting, police said. Authorities believe he was driving the scooter carrying Greene during the incident. Charges against Rodriguez are pending.

After the gunfire, Rodriguez crashed into oncoming traffic and fled the scene, according to law enforcement.

Incident details emerge

Surveillance footage reviewed by police shows two men on a motorcycle traveling against traffic in Williamsburg. The passenger, identified as Greene, allegedly drew a firearm and opened fire before the scooter crashed, authorities said.

The baby's family and community held a candlelight vigil on Friday night at the site of the shooting.

Community reacts

"No child should ever be caught in violence like this. Our hearts are broken," said a neighbor who attended the vigil.

Local leaders called for increased police presence in the area as residents demand justice for Kaori.
