New NDP leader faces immediate backlash over energy stance

Avi Lewis, the newly elected leader of Canada's New Democratic Party (NDP), has urged the party to engage in "hard conversations" after facing criticism for his opposition to new oil and gas development. Lewis secured the leadership on Sunday with a platform centered on climate action and affordability, but his position has already sparked tensions within the party.

Provincial leaders reject Lewis's energy policies

Several provincial NDP leaders have publicly distanced themselves from Lewis's stance. Carla Beck, the party's leader in Saskatchewan, declined his invitation to meet, calling his views on natural resource development "ideological and unrealistic" in a letter sent after his victory. In Alberta, Naheed Nenshi, the provincial NDP leader, criticized the federal party's direction under Lewis, arguing it failed to recognize Alberta's economic role in Canada.

Lewis defends climate-focused agenda

Despite the pushback, Lewis doubled down on his opposition to new oil and gas projects. He described the energy economy as "extremely unstable," citing rising oil costs linked to geopolitical conflicts, including the U.S.-Israel tensions with Iran. Lewis advocated for accelerating Canada's transition to renewable energy, framing it as a path to economic stability and independence.

"We think we need to accelerate the transition to a more stable, secure, and safe economy, and a more independent Canadian economy."

Party unity and rebuilding efforts

Lewis acknowledged the disagreements but framed them as a sign of the party's growth. He pledged to support provincial leaders and expand the NDP's base nationwide. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, another NDP leader, called for "heated debates" while expressing alignment with Lewis on broader goals, such as advocating for marginalized communities.

Federal NDP MPs have rallied behind Lewis. Don Davies, the party's interim leader and a Vancouver MP, stated the caucus was "100% united" behind the new leader. Davies emphasized the NDP's role as a counterbalance to the Liberal and Conservative parties, representing voters who feel overlooked by mainstream policies.

Political and economic context

Canada's oil and gas sector remains a cornerstone of its economy, with the majority of exports directed to the U.S. Prime Minister Mark Carney, a Liberal, has prioritized expanding Canada's energy infrastructure to reduce trade dependence on the U.S. and position the country as a global "energy superpower." This strategy has faced criticism, including from former Liberal minister Steven Guilbeault, who resigned last year over a pipeline agreement with Alberta.

Next steps for Lewis

Without a seat in Parliament, Lewis plans to focus on engaging the party's base across Canada before considering a run for office. He described his leadership as an opportunity to unite the NDP around its core values while navigating internal divisions over energy and climate policies.
