Netflix animated film claims Golden Globe for best animation

Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters secured the Golden Globe for best animated feature on Sunday, while its hit track Golden earned the award for best original song. The film, which follows a girl group battling supernatural forces through music, has dominated global charts since its June premiere.

Record-breaking success and cultural impact

The movie became Netflix's most-watched film ever within two months of release. Its lead single, Golden, topped the Billboard Hot 100, while another track, Your Idol, reached number eight. The film's triumph at the Golden Globes follows its recent wins for best animated feature and best song at the Critics' Choice Awards.

Directors celebrate music's unifying power

Co-director Maggie Kang highlighted the film's portrayal of women as "strong and bold." Fellow director Chris Appelhans, who accepted the Golden Globe with Kang, called the project a "love letter to music," emphasizing its ability to foster connection and shared humanity.

"To the power it has to connect us, to make us see some kind of shared humanity," Appelhans said.

Songwriter's emotional tribute to resilience

Singer-songwriter Ejae, who co-wrote and performed Golden, delivered a tearful acceptance speech. She recounted her early struggles to break into K-pop, facing rejection before finding success. The song, she said, is dedicated to "people who have had their doors closed at them."

"It's never too late to shine like you were born to be," Ejae said, quoting the song's lyrics. "I'm so part of a song that is helping other girls, other boys, and everyone get through their hardship to accept themselves."

Cast and crew reflect on personal journeys

Korean-American actress Arden Cho, who voiced protagonist Rumi, drew parallels between her life and the character's arc. She described past struggles with self-acceptance, particularly regarding her appearance, and called the film a tribute to underrepresented communities.

"I hated that I looked Asian, that I didn't have blue eyes and blonde hair, because that's what was beautiful at the time," Cho told BBC Global Women.

Oscar buzz builds after Golden Globe win

With the Golden Globes often serving as a precursor to the Academy Awards, KPop Demon Hunters is now a strong contender for the Oscars. The film is among 35 eligible for best animated feature, though the shortlist has yet to be announced.
