Nestlé initiates worldwide recall of infant formula

Nestlé has pulled specific batches of its SMA infant and follow-on formulas from global markets after detecting traces of cereulide, a toxin linked to food poisoning. The company confirmed the recall affects multiple countries but reported no confirmed illnesses tied to the products.

Scope and safety concerns

The recall spans several European nations, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, and Sweden. Nestlé emphasized that only designated batches are impacted, while all other products remain safe for consumption.

The toxin, cereulide, is produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus bacteria. According to the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), it can trigger rapid-onset symptoms such as vomiting and stomach cramps. The FSA warned that standard preparation methods-including boiling water-do not neutralize the toxin.

Product identification and refunds

Affected batch numbers are listed on Nestlé's regional websites, including its UK portal and food.gov.uk. Parents and caregivers are advised to check codes printed on the base of powdered formula tins or boxes, or on the side/top of ready-to-feed containers.

Nestlé has pledged full refunds for recalled products and attributed the contamination to an ingredient supplied by a third-party vendor.

Regional product names

  • France: Guigoz and Nidal infant formulas (voluntary recall)
  • Germany: Beba and Alfamino

Health guidance for caregivers

Jane Rawling, the FSA's head of incidents, urged parents to avoid feeding infants the recalled formulas. She stated, "We are acting swiftly to ensure all affected products are removed from shelves as a precaution."

"If you've already used these products and have health concerns, consult a healthcare professional immediately by contacting your GP or NHS 111."

Company response

Nestlé reiterated its commitment to infant safety, stating, "The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority." The company issued an apology for the disruption caused to families and caregivers.
