Legendary songwriter Neil Sedaka passes away
American singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka, known for iconic hits like Oh! Carol, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, and Laughter in the Rain, has died at the age of 86, his family announced.
"Our family is heartbroken by the sudden loss of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather," the statement read. "A true rock and roll legend and an inspiration to millions, he was, above all, an extraordinary person who will be profoundly missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him."
A six-decade career in music
Sedaka, a five-time Grammy nominee and accomplished pianist, left an indelible mark on the music industry over his 60-year career. Beyond his own performances, he penned hits for other renowned artists, including Love Will Keep Us Together, which topped the charts for Captain & Tennille in 1975.
In the 1970s, he recorded several albums under Elton John's record label, further cementing his legacy as a versatile and enduring talent.
Early success and the British Invasion
Born in Brooklyn, Sedaka studied at New York's prestigious Juilliard School and co-founded the doo-wop group The Tokens in the late 1950s. His breakthrough came as a teenager when he co-wrote Stupid Cupid, a 1958 hit for Connie Francis.
His popularity soared in the early 1960s, but his prominence waned later in the decade as the British Invasion reshaped the American music scene.
A lifelong passion for music
Despite shifting trends, Sedaka remained dedicated to his craft. In a 2012 BBC interview during a London performance at the Royal Albert Hall, he reflected on his dual love for classical and pop music.
"It's wonderful for the soul to play classical music. But touring the world, performing your own songs-it's an incredibly fulfilling experience, and I have no regrets."
