Suspect dies following synagogue attack in West Bloomfield

A 41-year-old man who crashed his vehicle into Temple Israel, a prominent Michigan synagogue, was confirmed dead on Thursday, authorities reported. The incident triggered a fire and left one security guard injured.

Sequence of events

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated the suspect drove through the synagogue's entrance and down a hallway before the vehicle ignited. Security personnel fired at the attacker as he advanced, later confronting him inside the building.

A guard struck by the vehicle was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Thirty police officers received treatment for smoke inhalation after flames engulfed sections of the synagogue.

Investigation and motive

The FBI is treating the incident as a "targeted act of violence against the Jewish community." The suspect was identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Lebanon who immigrated in 2011.

Sheriff Bouchard called the attack a "hateful, terrible thing" but declined to specify a motive. Authorities have not determined whether the fire or gunfire caused the suspect's death. The vehicle is being examined for potential explosives.

"We know there's evil in the world. When they show up, that's where training and preparation come in."

Community impact

Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the U.S., houses a preschool that was evacuated during the attack. All 140 students and staff were accounted for and transported to a nearby country club.

Lisa Stern, a longtime congregant, described the scene as parents and grandparents arrived in distress. "At first, when they didn't know, the parents were like falling to the ground," she said. "Thankfully it was minutes until they said the kids were safe."

Stern suggested the attacker had prior knowledge of the synagogue's layout, targeting areas to maximize damage. Security had been heightened since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023 amid rising antisemitism.

Broader context

Dearborn Mayor Mo Baydoun revealed the suspect had recently lost family members, including a niece and nephew, in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. Law enforcement had increased patrols at Jewish sites statewide following the attack.

President Donald Trump expressed solidarity with Michigan's Jewish community during a White House event, calling the incident "a terrible thing."

West Bloomfield, home to approximately 71,000 Jewish residents, has seen heightened security at religious sites in recent weeks. Stern noted the attack felt inevitable given escalating tensions. "This was a matter of when, not if," she said.
