Jordan takes top acting prize at Actor Awards

US actor Michael B. Jordan secured an unexpected victory at the Actor Awards on Sunday, snagging the best actor trophy for his role in the vampire horror film Sinners. The win injects fresh energy into his campaign ahead of the Academy Awards later this month.

Film sweeps major categories

Sinners also claimed the best ensemble cast award, capping a dominant night for the film. Co-star Delroy Lindo called the project an "incredible journey" during his acceptance speech, praising the cast's collective dedication.

"Every single day we brought ourselves, our hearts, our souls, to this endeavor," Lindo said. "To be recognized by you all, 'thank you' does not come near encompassing what we feel, the gratitude."

Incident at BAFTAs casts shadow

The Sinners wins follow a tense moment at the BAFTA Film Awards last week, when Tourette's campaigner John Davidson shouted a racial slur while Jordan and Lindo were on stage. Lindo later addressed the incident at the NAACP Image Awards, calling it a case of "something that could've been very negative becoming very positive."

Tributes and surprises

Jordan dedicated his award to his mother, Donna, thanking her for years of support, including driving him to auditions in New York when funds were tight. He also credited director Ryan Coogler and the Sinners cast for creating a space where he could deliver his "best work."

Other standout winners included Sean Penn for One Battle After Another, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, and Amy Madigan, who scored a surprise supporting actress win for Weapons. Catherine O'Hara received a posthumous award for her role in The Studio, with Seth Rogen accepting on her behalf and praising her blend of genius and kindness.

Oscars race heats up

With 16 nominations, Sinners enters the Oscars as the most nominated film in Academy Awards history. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film follows twin brothers (played by Jordan) whose plans to open a music venue are thwarted by a malevolent force. Despite strong support, Jordan has faced stiff competition in the best actor category, with Timothée Chalamet and others winning at precursor events.

The Actor Awards, voted on by fellow actors, often serve as a bellwether for Oscar momentum. While some categories have clear frontrunners-such as Buckley in best actress-Jordan's win leaves the best actor race wide open ahead of the March 15 ceremony.

Lifetime honor for Harrison Ford

Veteran actor Harrison Ford received the lifetime achievement award, joking that at 83, he was only "halfway" through his career. Ford reflected on the privilege of performing, saying, "Because of that privilege, I've come to know myself." He thanked the industry for the challenges and opportunities it has provided, adding, "I don't take that for granted."
