Met Gala 2026: A night of fashion as art

New York's annual Met Gala returns tonight, transforming the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a stage for fashion's most extravagant interpretations of art. This year's event, themed Costume Art, kicks off the museum's spring exhibition and promises a red carpet filled with references to centuries of artistic movements.

The theme and dress code

The 2026 Met Gala centers on the concept Fashion Is Art, encouraging guests to treat their outfits as living canvases. The accompanying exhibition, Costume Art, will showcase 400 pieces spanning 5,000 years of history, from ancient garments to contemporary designs. Organizers suggest attendees might draw inspiration from Baroque opulence, Impressionist brushstrokes, or Renaissance masterpieces-or take entirely unexpected creative liberties.

Vogue has already speculated on potential runway looks that could reappear on the red carpet, though the broad theme leaves room for diverse interpretations.

Co-chairs and host committee

Anna Wintour, the Met Gala's longtime chair, has enlisted Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams as this year's co-chairs. Beyoncé's return marks her first appearance since 2016, when she stunned in a futuristic ensemble for the event's tech-themed edition. The host committee includes Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Teyana Taylor, Blackpink's Lisa, Elizabeth Debicki, and Lena Dunham, with Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz leading the group.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, are also serving as co-chairs and sponsors, a decision that has sparked criticism from activists citing Amazon's labor practices. Protest posters have appeared near the museum in recent days, though the event proceeds as planned.

Event details and exclusivity

The gala begins at 18:00 EST (23:00 BST) on the first Monday of May, a tradition since the event's inception. Around 450 A-list guests will attend, though the guest list remains undisclosed until the red carpet unfolds. Inside, attendees will enjoy dinner, cocktails, live music, and a private preview of the Costume Art exhibition, which runs through January 2027.

Despite its exclusivity-tables start at $350,000 (£258,000) and individual tickets at $75,000 (£56,000)-most celebrities attend as guests of fashion brands, who cover costs in exchange for publicity. Even so, every invitation must receive final approval from Wintour, who has overseen the gala since 1995.

Red carpet coverage and cultural impact

The Met Gala's red carpet, though strictly no-selfie inside, dominates media coverage worldwide. Vogue will livestream the arrivals, hosted by Ashley Graham, Cara Delevingne, and La La Anthony, with Emma Chamberlain returning as correspondent. The event's timing often influences pop culture, as seen with this weekend's release of The Devil Wears Prada 2, a sequel to the 2006 film that satirized the fashion world and Wintour's tenure at Vogue.

While the public won't see inside the gala, the red carpet's spectacle ensures global attention, with outlets like the BBC providing live updates and social media buzz.

A look back and what to expect

The Met Gala was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has since resumed its status as fashion's most anticipated night. This year's Fashion Is Art theme invites bold creativity, and with co-chairs like Beyoncé and Kidman, the red carpet is poised to deliver unforgettable moments.

"The Met Gala is about celebrating fashion as a form of artistic expression," a spokesperson for the Costume Institute said. "This year's theme encourages guests to explore the dialogue between clothing and art history."
