Fans turn violent after Messi's abrupt exit from Kolkata event
Supporters in India's West Bengal state vandalized seats and hurled objects onto the pitch after Lionel Messi's highly anticipated appearance at Salt Lake Stadium was cut short on Saturday.
Chaos erupts over limited access
Thousands of fans, some having paid up to 12,000 rupees ($133) for tickets, grew furious when Messi's 20-minute pitch walk was obscured by officials and celebrities. Security swiftly escorted the Inter Miami star off the field, triggering an outburst of anger.
Videos showed spectators ripping up seats, storming the pitch, and throwing plastic chairs and water bottles. Banners and promotional tents were also damaged.
Organizers face backlash and investigation
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, calling it "deeply disturbing" and announcing a formal inquiry. She apologized to Messi and football fans, vowing to hold those responsible accountable.
"The committee will conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident, fix responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future."

A police official confirmed the arrest of the event's "chief organizer," though no further details were provided. Authorities are also exploring refund options for ticket holders.
Messi's team defends appearance
A spokesperson for Messi stated he fulfilled his agreed time commitment. Regarding event logistics, they directed inquiries to Banerjee's apology on social media. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) clarified it had no involvement in the "private event."
Fans express frustration over poor visibility
Attendees criticized the overcrowding of VIPs around Messi, blocking views for paying fans. One supporter told ANI news agency, "We paid 12,000 rupees but couldn't even see his face." Another, who spent a month's salary on tickets, said, "We came to see Messi, not politicians."
Security personnel were also accused of prioritizing selfies over crowd control.
Kolkata's football fervor on display
Messi's visit to Kolkata, part of his 'GOAT Tour' across four Indian cities, drew massive crowds despite security concerns. Earlier, a 70-foot statue of the footballer was unveiled virtually after a 27-day construction effort.
Fans lined streets overnight to glimpse Messi at his hotel, with some traveling thousands of kilometers. Hitesh, a 24-year-old lawyer from Bengaluru, called the experience "personal," citing Messi's influence on his own football aspirations.
The city, known for its passionate football culture amid India's cricket dominance, frequently hosts packed derbies. However, Saturday's chaos overshadowed the event's celebratory intent.
