Mel Schilling dies after two-year cancer battle

The Married at First Sight relationship expert and television personality Mel Schilling has died at the age of 54 following a diagnosis of colon cancer in December 2023, her husband Gareth announced on Tuesday.

Final moments and family tributes

Schilling passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Gareth described her as an "incredible mum, role model, and soulmate" to their daughter Maddie and himself.

He revealed that in her final moments, Schilling used her remaining strength to whisper a message for them, prioritising their well-being even as her own life slipped away.

"To most of you, she was Mel Schilling - matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV. To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie."

A life of resilience and joy

Gareth reflected on Schilling's extraordinary life, noting that she became both a mother and a television star at 42, excelling in both roles. Despite enduring two years of chemotherapy, she continued filming for Married at First Sight without complaint, embodying courage and grace throughout her illness.

"Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel," he wrote. "But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honour Mel, please live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff."

Career and impact on reality TV

Schilling joined Married at First Sight in 2016, first in her native Australia and later on the UK version, which airs on E4. She stepped down from the Australian series last month after 12 seasons, leaving a lasting legacy as a fierce advocate for women and healthy relationships.

Channel 4 described her as someone who "radiated joy, warmth and optimism," energising every room she entered. CPL Productions, the show's UK producer, called her "a friend to many" who went beyond being just an on-screen presenter.

Colleagues and friends pay tribute

Fellow MAFS expert Charlene Douglas shared her devastation, recalling laughter and love shared in Schilling's final days. "Mel's love for life, jokes and of course dancing will forever stay in my heart," she wrote.

Podcast co-host Elizabeth Day called Schilling "a radiant, shining light," while TV personalities Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, Alison Hammond, and Jay Howard expressed their grief and admiration for her strength and beauty.

Advocacy and awareness for bowel cancer

Schilling was diagnosed with colon cancer in late 2023 after initially being misdiagnosed with constipation. Despite undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy, she continued to work and share her journey publicly, raising awareness about the disease.

In March 2026, she revealed that the cancer had spread to her brain and that doctors could no longer treat it. "My light is starting to fade - and quickly," she wrote at the time.

Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, praised Schilling's openness about her diagnosis, stating that her story had encouraged countless people to seek medical advice for symptoms. "Every 12 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with bowel cancer," Edwards said, urging people to contact their GP if they experience symptoms such as bleeding or changes in bowel habits.
