McCullum stands by Brook and England players

England head coach Brendon McCullum has dismissed criticism of Harry Brook and the team's off-field conduct, calling recent scrutiny a "pile-on" after their 3-0 T20 series win over Sri Lanka.

Brook's nightclub incident under spotlight

Brook, England's white-ball captain, faced backlash after reports emerged of an altercation with a nightclub bouncer during the team's New Zealand tour last November. The 25-year-old initially claimed he was alone but later admitted teammates were present, a detail McCullum defended as an attempt to "look after his mates."

The Daily Telegraph reported that Brook, Jacob Bethell, and Josh Tongue could face an investigation by cricket's regulator over the incident, which occurred the night before an ODI loss to New Zealand.

McCullum slams "annoying" criticism

McCullum argued that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) handled disciplinary matters internally and rejected calls for public transparency. "When we're made aware of things that haven't gone right, we discipline them, we have a stern word, and deal with things internally," he said. "I don't think we need to release those findings every time something arises."

He added: "Harry was trying to look after his mates. Our job is to support these guys. Sometimes the criticism can go too far."

Noosa trip controversy

The coach also addressed criticism of the team's mid-Ashes break in Noosa, where players were photographed drinking. McCullum dismissed claims of excess, calling Noosa a "place where people go and retire" and denying it was a "stag do."

"If we wanted a tear-up, we'd have gone to the Gold Coast."

Leadership style under fire

McCullum's approach-balancing freedom with accountability-has drawn mixed reactions. He clarified his stance: "I'm fiercely determined, fiercely competitive, and I want the best for these guys. The misconception that I run a loose ship couldn't be further from the truth."

He reiterated his early advice to players: "Don't do anything that lands you on the front page, and nothing good happens after midnight."

Brook's leadership praised

Despite off-field challenges, McCullum lauded Brook's on-field leadership ahead of the T20 World Cup, which begins on Sunday. "His tactical acumen is as good as I've seen in a short period of time," he said. "He wears his intelligence lightly and is a strong leader."

England's campaign starts against Nepal on 8 February (09:30 GMT).
