Over 160 million Americans brace for severe winter storm
A powerful winter storm is set to batter much of the United States starting Friday, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerously low temperatures that could endanger lives, federal forecasters warned.
Storm path and expected conditions
The National Weather Service (NWS) stated the storm will move eastward from the High Plains and Rocky Mountains, creating "extremely dangerous" conditions. Arctic air will push sub-zero temperatures and wind chills across multiple regions, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for anyone exposed.
Cities including Memphis, Nashville, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York are expected to see significant snowfall. The NWS Probabilistic Precipitation Portal forecasts over a foot of snow from Colorado through West Virginia and extending to Boston.
Record-breaking cold and travel disruptions
Meteorologists anticipate numerous low-temperature records will be shattered, with wind chills potentially dropping below -50°F (-46°C) in the Northern Plains. A broader area of the southeastern U.S. will also face freezing temperatures.
Transportation officials across the country have issued warnings about widespread travel disruptions, including flight delays and cancellations at major airports. Some airlines are allowing passengers to reschedule flights without extra fees due to the expected chaos.
"Travel will be nearly impossible during the storm's peak," NWS meteorologists Rich Otto and Tony Fracasso told CBS.
States declare emergencies as preparations ramp up
Governors in Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina have declared states of emergency, mobilizing National Guard troops and emergency response teams to assist affected areas.
Motorists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel over the weekend as road conditions deteriorate rapidly.
Canada also faces freezing temperatures
Meanwhile, Canada is already experiencing frigid conditions, with snowfall expected in eastern and Atlantic regions by Monday, according to meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
Safety advisories issued
Authorities emphasize the importance of staying indoors, dressing in layers, and limiting exposure to the cold. Residents in affected areas are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and heed emergency alerts.
