Actor expresses interest in reprising iconic pirate role

Scottish actor Mark Bonnar has revealed he would relish the chance to play Blackbeard again in a future Assassin's Creed film or television series.

Bonnar, who resides in Hertfordshire, first portrayed the notorious pirate using motion-capture technology in the 2013 video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. The game, set in the 18th century, followed the story of pirate Edward Kenway and featured historical figures, including Blackbeard himself.

The title earned critical acclaim, receiving four BAFTA Games Award nominations in 2014, including Best Game.

Ubisoft announces remake ahead of Netflix series

On Thursday, Ubisoft confirmed a remake of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, set for release in July. Meanwhile, Netflix is currently filming a live-action Assassin's Creed series in Italy, capitalizing on the success of recent video game adaptations like The Last of Us and Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Bonnar's enthusiasm for reprising Blackbeard

In an interview with the BBC ahead of the remake announcement, Bonnar admitted he feels a mix of envy and frustration whenever he sees other pirate-themed productions. He described his original role as one of his career highlights.

"I'd love to play Blackbeard [in a series], and I get really kind of jealous and annoyed whenever I see a pirate show."

He recalled the secrecy surrounding the original audition, initially believing it was for an animated series before discovering it was for a video game. Bonnar, a self-proclaimed lifelong gamer, called the experience "amazing."

Praise for storytelling in gaming

Bonnar, who has played video games his entire life, also expressed admiration for the writing in franchises like God of War and The Last of Us. He singled out Black Flag writer Darby McDevitt for crafting a compelling narrative.
