Rashford's future remains uncertain at Manchester United
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has stated that no decision has been made regarding Marcus Rashford's future at the club for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old forward is currently on a season-long loan at Barcelona, with the Spanish side holding a €30 million (£26.1 million) option to buy him by 15 June.
Barcelona's purchase option and United's stance
Barcelona have until mid-June to decide whether to activate their option to sign Rashford permanently. However, Manchester United's leadership is reportedly unwilling to renegotiate the terms of the deal. Rashford, who is expected to be part of Thomas Tuchel's squad for this summer's World Cup, has not ruled out a return to Old Trafford, where he still has two years remaining on his contract. The deal includes a 25% salary increase if United qualify for the Champions League next season.
Carrick's perspective on Rashford
Carrick, who managed Rashford during a brief three-match stint following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure in 2021, acknowledged that decisions regarding the forward's future need to be made but emphasized that nothing has been finalized yet.
"There's decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time, nothing's been decided. It will be, because it has to be at a certain point, but at this stage, there's nothing to say."

Rashford's motivations and club dynamics
Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who left the club in January, suggested that Rashford sought a new challenge when he joined Aston Villa on loan earlier this year. Carrick, however, shares a unique bond with Rashford, having been his teammate, coach, and briefly his manager. Rashford is currently the club's 15th all-time top scorer.
Club minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly aiming to reduce the highest salaries at Manchester United. With Casemiro set to leave this summer, Rashford would become the club's highest earner if he returns.
Carrick's focus on current squad
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Rashford and other players on loan, Carrick emphasized his commitment to working with the current squad to maximize their potential.
"Whoever's here, I want to work with, and help them improve. At the moment, it's this squad of players. There's obviously players on loan, and whatever happens with that later on will happen. But certainly, as a coach, and leader of a squad, we want to get the best out of everyone."

Upcoming match and squad challenges
Carrick's immediate focus is on Manchester United's Premier League match against Chelsea, where a victory would extend their lead over Liam Rosenior's side to 10 points. However, the team faces challenges due to suspensions that have sidelined central defenders Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez. Additionally, Leny Yoro was absent from the squad that traveled to London on Friday.
If Yoro remains unavailable, Carrick may be forced to field either Luke Shaw or Noussair Mazraoui, or even veteran midfielder Casemiro, alongside 19-year-old Ayden Heaven in defense.
