Man appears in court over fatal stabbing near Clifden
A 35-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a woman found dead on the outskirts of Clifden, County Galway, earlier this week.
Victim identified as Iranian national
The deceased has been named as Masumeh Manojan, who was in her 30s and originally from Iran. Her body was discovered on Thursday morning with fatal slash and stab wounds.
Accused denies murder charge
Ali Sohrabi, who has no fixed address, appeared before Galway District Court on Saturday. When asked to respond to the murder charge, he replied "no," according to court testimony.
A detective told the court that Sohrabi is accused of killing Manojan sometime between 27 and 28 May.
Connection to asylum accommodation centre
Manojan's body was found near an International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) centre, which provides housing for asylum seekers in Ireland.
Remanded in custody with medical support
Sohrabi was remanded to Castlerea Prison in County Roscommon. His defence solicitor requested medical and psychiatric assistance during his detention, a request the judge granted.
The accused is scheduled to appear again via video link next Wednesday.
