Suspect detained following deadly shooting in El Ejido
Police in southern Spain have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting his parents and wounding four others, including two young children, in the town of El Ejido, near Almería.
Timeline of the attack
Emergency services received reports of the shooting at 23:00 local time (22:00 BST) on Monday. The suspect allegedly fled the scene before surrendering to authorities at a local police station shortly afterward, according to news agency Europa Press.
Victims and injuries
The two fatalities have been identified as the suspect's parents, though Spanish authorities have not formally released their names. Among the injured are a seven-month-old infant, believed to be the suspect's son, and an 18-month-old child, as reported by local media. A 60-year-old man is also among those hospitalized with serious injuries.
Investigation underway
The Guardia Civil is leading the inquiry into the incident, focusing on determining a potential motive. Mass shootings remain uncommon in Spain; data from Project Insight, which monitors gun violence in Europe, records only four such incidents between 2000 and 2023.
Community response
Residents of El Ejido, a small agricultural town, expressed shock at the violence. Local officials have not yet commented on whether additional security measures will be implemented in the area.
