Malaysian rapper Namewee faces drug charges after hotel arrest
Kuala Lumpur authorities charged popular Malaysian rapper Namewee with illegal drug use and possession on Monday, following his arrest in a hotel last month, local media reported. The 42-year-old artist, known for his provocative satirical works, pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.
Hotel raid and substance allegations
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus stated that officers detained Namewee on October 22 after discovering pills suspected to be ecstasy (MDMA) in his hotel room. Subsequent tests allegedly revealed traces of amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and THC in his system, according to Marsus' official statement.
Under Malaysian law, a conviction for drug possession could result in up to five years imprisonment and corporal punishment by caning.
Connection to influencer's death
A police source told local outlets that Namewee had been staying at the same hotel as Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, whose body was found in her bathtub. In an Instagram post, Namewee expressed condolences for Hsieh's death, criticizing emergency response delays and claiming he had received blackmail threats in recent days.
"The truth will be out when the police report is released," Namewee wrote, denying drug use or possession.
History of controversy
Namewee has repeatedly drawn attention for tackling taboo subjects in his music. His 2016 track Oh My God, filmed at Malaysian religious sites, led to his arrest for allegedly insulting religious sensitivities. In 2021, his song Fragile-mocking Chinese nationalism and addressing Taiwan's sovereignty and Uyghur persecution-went viral among Mandarin speakers but was banned in China.
Legal proceedings
The artist has maintained silence on both his drug charges and Hsieh's death, citing ongoing investigations. His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
