Tragedy strikes Essex lottery winner
A man who won £1 million in the Euromillions lottery after saving a police officer's life has died following a suspected hit-and-run incident in Essex.
The incident
Anthony Canty, 39, was struck by a vehicle while cycling in Tiptree on 21 May. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died four days later. The collision occurred at approximately 06:30 BST on Maldon Road.
Essex Police confirmed that an 18-year-old man driving a Ford KA was arrested in connection with the crash. He was initially held on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. The suspect was later released under investigation while inquiries continue.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident, to come forward.
A life of heroism and luck
Canty, a father of two from Maldon, gained local recognition in April 2020 after performing CPR on a police officer who collapsed on a bus. His quick actions were credited with saving the officer's life.
Just days later, on 5 May 2020, Canty and his partner, Katie Sullivan, won a £1 million Euromillions prize. The couple celebrated with champagne, and Canty famously pledged to keep his job in the water supply sector despite his newfound wealth.
Police appeal for information
A spokesperson for Essex Police stated: "He remains under investigation and our enquiries continue." Authorities are urging anyone with information about the collision to contact them immediately.
