Los Angeles schools vote to curb classroom screen time
Los Angeles has become the first major U.S. school district to impose sweeping restrictions on student screen time, following a unanimous board vote on Tuesday.
Policy details
The new resolution directs district staff to draft grade-specific screen-time rules before the 2026-27 academic year. Children in first grade and younger will be barred from using any digital devices during school hours.
YouTube and other video-streaming platforms will be blocked on all school-issued tablets and laptops. Parents will also gain the right to exclude their children from specific digital learning tools.
Rationale behind the move
The district, which serves approximately 500,000 students, cited research linking excessive screen exposure among 8- to 11-year-olds to higher risks of obesity and depression, as well as lower cognitive test scores.
Board member Nick Melvoin, who authored the resolution, acknowledged that devices were essential during the 2020 pandemic but argued that a recalibration is now necessary.
"We have the chance to lead the nation by setting developmentally appropriate limits that put students ahead of screens. This isn't about reverting to the past-it's about reimagining how technology serves learning."
Nick Melvoin, LAUSD Board Member
Broader context
The vote builds on a 2024 district policy that banned mobile phones and social media in classrooms. Board member Kelly Gonez emphasized the need to balance technological benefits with potential harms.
"Technology can enhance learning, but unchecked screen time poses real risks to student health and development. This resolution ensures we prioritize evidence-based limits while safeguarding childhood well-being."
Kelly Gonez, LAUSD Board Member
Advocacy response
Anya Meksin, deputy director of the parent group Schools Beyond Screens, called the decision a "historic shift" in educational technology use.
"This reform could set a national precedent. We hope other districts will follow Los Angeles' lead quickly."

Implementation timeline
District officials will finalize the new policies over the coming months, with full enforcement slated for the start of the 2026-27 school year.
