Lord Mandelson released pending further investigation

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that former UK minister and diplomat Peter Mandelson was released on bail early Tuesday, hours after his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The 72-year-old was seen returning to his London residence at 02:00 GMT.

Arrest follows search warrants and ongoing probe

Mandelson was detained at a Camden address in north London on Monday and taken to Wandsworth police station for questioning. The arrest came after police executed search warrants at two properties in Wiltshire and Camden earlier in the day.

The investigation, launched earlier this month, centers on allegations that Mandelson shared market-sensitive government information with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a minister.

Mandelson denies wrongdoing amid Epstein document fallout

Though Mandelson has not publicly addressed the allegations in recent weeks, sources close to him maintain he acted within the law and was not motivated by financial gain. His arrest follows the release of US Department of Justice documents last month, including emails between Mandelson and Epstein.

One 2009 email appears to show Mandelson relaying an adviser's assessment to then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown regarding policy measures, such as an "asset sales plan." Another exchange discusses a proposed tax on bankers' bonuses and confirms an imminent Eurozone bailout a day before its public announcement in 2010.

Government faces pressure over transparency and vetting

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told BBC Breakfast the government intends to release documents related to Mandelson's appointment as UK ambassador to the US but must ensure they do not interfere with the police investigation. "We are committed to transparency," she said, "but it would be irresponsible to jeopardize an ongoing probe."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's office previously alleged Mandelson "lied" during his vetting process before his February 2025 appointment. Mandelson was dismissed in September after Downing Street cited new details about his ties to Epstein.

"The contrast with the continued inaction in the United States is undeniable. Survivors deserve transparency, swift investigation, and real justice, no matter who is implicated."

Political fallout and calls for accountability

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called Mandelson's arrest "the defining moment of Sir Keir's premiership," criticizing the prime minister as "weak." Meanwhile, US politicians have urged Mandelson to cooperate with a congressional investigation into Epstein's activities.

Mandelson, a key architect of Labour's 1997 election victory under Tony Blair, has faced mounting scrutiny over his associations with Epstein, which resurfaced after the release of US legal documents.
