Court approves treatment programme for rapper
A California judge has allowed Grammy-winning artist Lil Nas X to enter a mental health diversion programme following his arrest last August for allegedly assaulting police officers while partially unclothed in Los Angeles.
Arrest details and charges
Montero Lamar Hill, known professionally as Lil Nas X, was taken into custody in the early hours on Ventura Boulevard wearing only underpants and cowboy boots. Authorities charged him with attacking an officer and resisting arrest.
During the incident, Hill was also transported to a hospital due to concerns over a potential overdose. If convicted of the felony charges, he could face up to five years in prison.
Judge's decision and conditions
At a hearing on Monday, Judge Alan Schneider granted Hill's request to participate in a diversion programme, which may lead to the charges being dismissed if he complies with all legal requirements over the next two years.
"I'm thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse."

Hill's lawyer, Christy O'Connor, told BBC News that the judge described Hill's behaviour during the arrest as "aberrant from his normal conduct" and noted that he "appears to be doing very well." Schneider added that treatment would benefit both Hill and the community.
Mental health diagnosis and treatment
Following the incident, Hill was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His legal team informed the court that he had already spent two months in a treatment facility in Arizona after his arrest.
Diversion programmes offer alternatives to incarceration for individuals with mental health conditions involved in the criminal justice system.
Family perspective on struggles
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times after the arrest, Hill's father, Robert Stafford, said his son had been deeply affected by his mother's battle with addiction and his inability to help her.
"For a 26-year-old to have to deal with what he's dealing with-to be a breadwinner for a lot of people, the inability to change his mother's situation and the pressure he puts on himself-that can weigh heavily on your heart."
