Dern joins *The White Lotus* cast after Bonham Carter exit
Oscar winner Laura Dern has been cast in the fourth season of HBO's acclaimed series The White Lotus, just days after Helena Bonham Carter departed due to creative differences.
Filming underway in France amid Cannes backdrop
The new season is being shot in the south of France, with its plot set against the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival. Production is expected to continue during this year's festival, scheduled from 13 to 24 May.
Bonham Carter's departure explained
HBO confirmed last week that Bonham Carter had left the show after it became clear her character, written by creator Mike White, did not align with the vision once filming began. The network stated the role would be reworked and recast, without providing further details on the disagreement.
"With filming just under way on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set. The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks."

The British actress, known for her roles in Harry Potter, The King's Speech, and The Crown, will not return for the season. HBO expressed regret over the split but remained hopeful about future collaborations.
Dern's history with Mike White
Dern, who won an Oscar for Marriage Story in 2020, has previously collaborated with White on the 2007 film Year of the Dog and co-created the HBO comedy-drama Enlightened, which earned her a Golden Globe. Her filmography also includes Jurassic Park, Blue Velvet, and Wild.
Season four cast and setting
Set in a luxury resort on the French Riviera, the upcoming season will explore the high-stakes world of Cannes, blending satire with drama. Dern joins a cast that includes Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, and Vincent Cassel.
