Netflix blockbuster's follow-up confirmed by songwriter
Mark Sonnenblick, the songwriter behind Netflix's most-watched film KPop Demon Hunters, revealed a sequel is in development. The announcement comes as Sonnenblick enjoys a landmark year, having won a Golden Globe, a Grammy, and an Academy Award nomination for co-writing the film's hit song Golden.
From obscurity to global acclaim
Sonnenblick described the film's success as a journey from "zero to a million," crediting fans for propelling Golden-the first K-pop song to win a Grammy-to widespread recognition. The song's Oscar shortlisting arrived just hours before his interview with BBC Newsbeat, leaving him visibly moved.
"This song could have disappeared. The only reason this nomination happened is fans responded and told other people to watch the film."

Sequel plans take shape
While Netflix has yet to officially greenlight the follow-up, creator Maggie Kang previously hinted at expanding the KPop Demon Hunters universe. Sonnenblick confirmed the project is "in process," though he emphasized a story-driven approach to new music.
"There's going to be a whole development process before we get deep into writing the songs. The music will follow from the story and that's if it makes sense for us all to be doing it again."

London debut for new musical
Amid the sequel buzz, Sonnenblick is preparing for the London premiere of his musical Midnight at the Never Get. Starring Tony Award winner Ben Platt, the production opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory in July 2026. The show, set in a 1960s New York gay bar, explores a singer-songwriter romance.
"I went in thinking 'oh, these are by my lovely friend,' but I was really bowled over by the character and the score."

London's theatre scene draws stars
Platt praised London's "intelligent and respectful" audiences, calling the city a "safe space to create something new." The musical follows Sonnenblick's collaboration with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada, further cementing his reputation in theatre.
Meanwhile, Platt-who won a Tony for Dear Evan Hansen-admitted to attempting Golden's high notes in the shower, though he relies on a YouTube karaoke version for performances.
What's next
Midnight at the Never Get runs from July to September 2026. Sonnenblick's dual focus on the musical and the KPop Demon Hunters sequel underscores a career at its peak, with both projects poised to captivate audiences across film and stage.
