Royal invitation marks historic diplomatic milestone
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will welcome Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle on 18-19 March, Buckingham Palace announced on Sunday. The visit marks Nigeria's first state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years.
Symbolism and soft-power diplomacy
State visits are designed to strengthen international ties through ceremonial hospitality. The last Nigerian leader to receive such an invitation was military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who met Queen Elizabeth II in 1989 during a four-day trip.
While Tinubu has met King Charles since taking office after Nigeria's contested 2023 election-including a Buckingham Palace reception in September 2024 and a bilateral meeting at COP28 in Dubai-this visit elevates the occasion with full ceremonial pageantry.
Economic and diplomatic ties deepen
The visit coincides with growing UK-Nigeria relations. Trade between the two nations exceeded £8 billion in the year to October 2025, making Nigeria one of Britain's key partners in Africa. In 2024, the countries signed a trade and investment partnership to expand business opportunities.
Though the March agenda remains undisclosed, state visits typically feature carriage processions, a state banquet, and high-level political discussions.
King's long-standing Nigerian connections
Charles has visited Nigeria four times as Prince of Wales-in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018-with Camilla joining him on the latter trip. The King has publicly expressed admiration for Nigerian culture, including Pidgin English and Afrobeats music.
In 2023, his charity, The King's Trust International, launched in Nigeria with a project targeting youth unemployment. Nigeria, a Commonwealth member, holds strategic importance for the UK.
Record year for royal diplomacy
2025 saw an unusually high number of state visits, with Charles hosting French President Emmanuel Macron, U.S. President Donald Trump, and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier-the most in a single year since 1988.
