Trippier announces Newcastle exit after contract ends

England defender Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United this summer when his current deal expires, the club confirmed in a joint statement on Saturday.

Key role in Newcastle's revival

Trippier joined Newcastle from Atlético Madrid in January 2022, becoming the first signing under the club's new Saudi-led ownership. At the time, Newcastle sat in the relegation zone, but Trippier played a pivotal role in their turnaround under manager Eddie Howe.

Last season, he helped end the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by lifting the EFL Cup. He also contributed to Newcastle's back-to-back Champions League qualifications in 2023 and 2025.

Emotional farewell from the defender

In a heartfelt message, the 35-year-old described his time at Newcastle as feeling "most at home" and expressed gratitude to fans, teammates, and staff.

"It's emotional, and I'm really going to miss it. I want to say a massive thank you to the supporters for all the support through the good and the bad times for me personally. You've always stood by me."

"To my teammates, it's been an amazing journey with you guys. I'm going to miss you all, but winning a trophy with you was really special-the best of my career."

Howe praises Trippier's leadership and impact

Eddie Howe, who previously worked with Trippier at Burnley, credited the defender with raising standards at the club.

"Kieran has been magnificent for us on and off the pitch. From the moment he walked through the door, he helped drive standards that changed the club's trajectory."

"His leadership, technical ability, and crossing have been invaluable. In difficult moments, his experience proved calming, and his will to win inspired the team."

Legacy as one of Newcastle's greatest

Despite arriving for a modest £12 million, Trippier's influence at Newcastle has been profound. When he joined in 2022, the club had won just one game all season and suffered a humiliating FA Cup exit to Cambridge United. His arrival helped attract other key signings, including captain Bruno Guimarães.

While this season has been challenging domestically, Trippier has fulfilled his goal of helping Newcastle reach the level he believed they "needed to be." His departure marks the end of an era as the club looks to rejuvenate its squad with younger players.

Fans are expected to give Trippier a hero's send-off, with many regarding him as the club's greatest right-back.
